Never been a waiter but had plenty of friends do it. Seems like making tipping completely voluntary (non compulsory for large parties, no social stigma) and just paying an f'n living wage would be better for everyone. Yes, the prices on the menu are higher, but you know what you're paying. People can't go out to eat if they can't afford the whole experience. Also if you're working and you get a slow night you didn't just stand there for 4 hours for $9. Also keeps businesses from bringing in too much wait staff 'just in case' and sending people home. They call you in, you get paid for 4 hours minimum.
Melissa "The Creeper" Nicole 2015-02-16T22:03:31-05:00

Poor tippers piss me off. I've never worked tables but I have worked customer service, I know what a pain in the rear people can be. The other night Mrs. Historian and I were out at a little mom and pop family restaurant. It was a dead night only us and maybe two other tables. Our waitress seemed a little frazzled when she stopped by to take our drink orders. After about 10 minutes we quickly figured out one of the reasons she was having such a rough day was due to one of the other couples in the restaurant. There was just no pleasing that couple. We made sure to be extra polite to our waitress and engaged her in conversation as time allowed and I made sure to give her a 300% tip. I figured I couldn't start a scene by confronting the jag-off that was giving her grief but I could at least show that we appreciated her efforts.

I've left a zero tip once in my life. We went out for my birthday. It took over an hour just to get water and it was already 3 hours before we got food. We were waiting 20+ minutes for the bill and just pooled our cash which happened to be within a dollar and bolted. It wasn't even like a super nice restaurant where you'd expect to spend time, just a chain. The place wasn't even full.
I'm sure that the waiter wasn't the only issue, but they never even swung by to say 'hey'. Also if they did tip pool, everyone there that night deserved no tip. It was super sad.

I firmly believe that this country needs a 'bad customer' card. So hear me out. If you work in any customer service field for at least 1 year you get a 'bad customer' card. This entitles you to bitch out or treat any service person like crap once per year. If you bitch at a customer service person they may request to see and punch your card. (digital punch, gotta get 21st century on this). If you don't have one or have already used your punch, you've just committed a felony, the punishment of which is 2 days of the crappiest community service the court can find.

@Tchotchke, okay, so the assumption is that the "BCC" would be used legitimately against an incompetent individual. I'm not sure that would necessarily happen. If someone is already having a bad day that could (and probably will) jade their impression of okay service.
As for fewer assholes, well, in theory it sounds good but the fact of the matter is it will probably just mean people will be more willing to take out their frustrations on others. An asshole is always going to be an asshole.

Welcome Amber!
@Historian
Some people are actually terrible at their jobs. It happens. Plus, this would encourage more people to work in a customer facing field which would probably just mean fewer assholes all around, and that can't be a bad thing.

@Amber: Welcome! I hear puppies can get up to some mischief, themselves...
Howdy
Songs were from http://www.whitewallservices.com/customer-service-in-pop-songs/
Those providing customer service
Blue Monday – New Order
Manic Mondays – The Bangles
I don’t like Mondays – The Boomtown Rats
Whatever you want – Status Quo
Nine till Five – Sheena Easton
It’s Five O’clock Somewhere – Alan Jackson
Customer side
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for – U2
Don’t keep my hanging on the telephone – Blondie
Shout – Tears for Fears
I can’t get no Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones
Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps please – Splodgenessabounds
Reward – Teardrop Explodes (This in reference to the plethora of customer loyalty programmes we all drown under)
Lost in the Supermarket – The Clash
@Tchotchke, okay, so the assumption is that the "BCC" would be used legitimately against an incompetent individual. I'm not sure that would necessarily happen. If someone is already having a bad day that could (and probably will) jade their impression of okay service.
As for fewer assholes, well, in theory it sounds good but the fact of the matter is it will probably just mean people will be more willing to take out their frustrations on others. An asshole is always going to be an asshole.

@Historian
If I have to wait a year before using it again, I'm only going to whip it out for a really good reason.
Also just noticed that out of context, that last post could be taken improperly. :(
Tchotchke, so many things...
Man, we could still break $6.7M today ...
@GCoD: Could? Nay, will.
And it's down to $1.9M to beat Ouya ... this could happen folks ...
Odd little youtube on one of my interests:

@tchotcke and LZ- so many amazing things...
@Tchotchke, lol. Sorry, that will definitely be taken out of context!
I get that rational people like you would be that way with it but not every person is rational, especially when having a bad day.
I really want to beat the Ouya! Come on last min folks get backing!
@Historian
True, and because of that there is no perfect system.
All the yeas!
But back to a serious topic. How many copies should I get? What's everyone else in for?
