I wouldn't back any small maker 3D printer right now, they are all going to fail. Go to Netflix and watch the documentary "Print the Legend" if you want some real information. Anyone who succeeds in making a good cheap 3D printer will either be bought out by the big boys (like Makerbot) or sued into non-existence like Form Labs.

And again, the elephant in the room. Those 3D printers that print PLA plastics -- they aren't telling you the PLA breaks down after a few years ...most PLA is cornstarch based, though you can get ABS materials. And ABS gets brittle with age as well. I bought some tanks off eBay that were 3D printed to experiment on, and they are hard, brittle, and full of the tiny ridges that are endemic in 3D printing.

When I worked as a professional model builder, the old McDonnell-Douglas plant here had installed a stereolith machine. It wasn't much use, but that was 12 years ago ... often we could hand-make a part quicker than them.

I have made lots of things, but really, keeping up with manufacturing technology is sort of a hobby for me. The model shop I worked for had everything, up to laser cutters (check them out, www.laserkit.com ). When I retired I bought a small milling machine, a small lathe, set up my shop with spray booth ... I already had the saws and sanders. I used to own a small "1/2 ton" injection molding machine, made my own dies for that, I still have a spin casting machine in the basement. My next exploration is a Crikut "Explore" cutting machine.

Things that I never thought I would need on a somewhat regular basis for cake decoratung, etc. I always need stencils- companies love their logos airbrushed on cookies, chocolates. I would love a compact color projector, a printer for edible ink and sugar images...

I would love to have all those things at my disposal, but since they aren't ordered as frequently- I can't justify the money. There's a very sweet guy on etsy who's laser cut a few stencils for me at a very low price and ships fast.

The Crikut Explore is about $300 all-up -- but there would be a learning curve to the CAD software. The amazing thing about the Crikut Explore is that it can take ANY True Type Font (.TTF extension) and cut it without changes. It can also process a .JPG or .BMP image and cut it, and can also import AutoCAD's .DXF extension.

It was in the early days of kickstarter. The majority of projects were actual small businesses. MUCH less technology projects, and probably a fraction of the creators they have now. I think when they first started they were being very very picky. I had multiple reward tiers, packages of desserts, etc. but I think they didn't like that i was trying to raise money to pay for equipment, legal fees, kitchen space. I think they wanted a more tangible end goal.

I also get in my own way. Although I've had plenty of business advice and people tell me that I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I have to constantly remind meself that if I was good at promoting and managing a business- THAT would be my career. I'm good at desserts, I'm good at creating. I can make something that will make you jizz in your pants (sorry!). So I let word of mouth and Social networking take the wheel.
Well it would be a good idea to get yourself started up at the moment for sure. All of those things you listed are what people ask for now anyway. I would love to see the reward tiers O.O
