@Quinn,
lol Ok, just checking. :)
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-26T21:09:58-05:00
@Andrew
It's more than you'd think. KS takes 5%, credit card fees are 3-5%, survey and organization for pre-fulfilment is another 3-5%. Then you have to print the cards, make the box, print the instructions, make a 'thing-of-incredible-delight', pay someone to pack it all, pay for shipping, pay for the sales tax, and then pay someone for fulfilment (since let's face it, your friends may come over for a day and get paid in pizza to pack 1,000... not 100,000+) for shipping and those logistics. All said, their margins are likely ~50% which is actually on the low side for game.
So they spent months of designing, will spend months on fulfilling and launching, and spent decades building the credentials and fan base.
tl;dr if it's so insanely profitable and easy, it'd be done all the time.
Cal "Blackhawk" Rasmussen 2015-01-26T21:11:12-05:00
That must be once big cake to finish before the next update. hahaha
@Andrew Hiller: Well, let's see. Postage, fulfillment (which could conceivable take hiring some people), taxes, the KickStarter cut, an so forth... nope, they ain't gonna be millionaires when the dust settles.
@Andrew Hiller: thank you my dear I've only been mentioning it here at least once a day from Day1, so I'm kind of hoping for the squeaky wheel gets the oil bit.
Or more like crazy cat lady card game enthusiast gets one card she can say she thought of. Hahahahah
@Eric Aschner; Looks like you beat me to it as I was typing, but your numbers are WAY more precise. (#GMTA)
Chris "The Historian" Loth 2015-01-26T21:13:02-05:00
Happy B-day Elan! I'm guessing hitting 100k backers and hitting 4 million in funds was a pretty sweet present. Hopefully you're surrounded by friends and loved ones to help you celebrate.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-26T21:14:36-05:00
@yohannon
Ha, I actually had a muuuuch longer version buried somewhere deep below that basically gave the entire SG&A. I just don't feel like retyping it and I really don't feel like digging through a few thousand comments. :)
Me thinks perhaps they are waiting for us to break the RR backer number before they mention the next stretch goal since we are so close to it.
Any guesses as to when we might surpass that number? I'm thinking 11pm tonight pacific time as people may take a backing breather for dinner and that silly thing called family time. ;-)
Alex Williams 2015-01-26T21:31:08-05:00
Happy Birthday Elan!!!
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-26T21:41:02-05:00
Okay, did the cost break down again, even a little better. Will keep it handy for the future.
Projected costs of a $35 deck (Warning, only my guesstimate):
KS cut - 5% = $1.75
Credit card processing fees - 3-5% = $1.40
Pre-fulfilment survey and processing - 3-5% = $1.40
Actual card production on decent cards - $2/pack = $4
Instructions / box / packaging = $2
'Thing-of-incredible-delight' = $2 (may vary depending on where you buy delights)
Freight to Partners = $.50
Postal packing and shipping first class = $4
Sales tax - 5% = $1.75 (avg amongst the states I'm guessing)
Fulfilment partner cut = $2 (best guess from Amazon's site)
==========
Revenue = $35 - $1.75 - $1.40 - $1.40 = $30.45
Costs = $4 + $2 + $2 + $.50 + $4 + $1.75 + $2 = $16.25
Profit per unit = $14.20 (41% of top line revenue)
The single decks are $15 cheaper, but only save about $4.95 in shipping and production costs. They're making less money per unit on the $20 / deck version compared to the $35 for two version.
Most of the excess revenue will still be pumped into production to produce games to sell after the KS. If they do keep any money, they have to pay income tax on it.
Kevin McKenna 2015-01-26T21:41:34-05:00
Can the next stretch goal be laminated or waterproof cards? I always play tabletop games with my friends when we drink and all it takes is one spilled beer to take out a few of the cards.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-26T21:45:31-05:00
From previous estimate, if 41% profit is accurate they have $1.66M in profit currently. If plastic adds $4 per deck (actually a low estimate, but give them the benefit here) for ~200,000 decks, that's $800K, or half of their current profit margin.
Charlie N. 2015-01-26T21:50:12-05:00
@Creator I agree with everyone that water proof card is great idea...
Keith "Virrgo" Goken 2015-01-26T21:54:00-05:00
I put in a call in to our Icelandic friends, we need 1 million backers
Eric 'Trinkets' Baumgarten 2015-01-26T21:54:42-05:00
@Charlie n. No. Not everyone wants plastic cards. High quality cardstock would be the way to go. There is a HUGE amount of backers that do not want to see plastic.
As long as they are good quality cards, I'm indifferent to the material.
Robert Pendell 2015-01-26T22:13:47-05:00
@Evan Same. I just would like some good quality cards that will last. Nothing cheap. Material is a non issue.
On that note I checked and it looks like we are 2500 backers or so away from the record.
Jeff Gabrielse 2015-01-26T22:19:01-05:00
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it. But I see a lot of comments involving the quality of card stock. If it's fulfilled by the same folks who did CAH, then the quality is very good. I own it and a few expansions packs for it and it would take a lot to wipe them out. You could spill several beers and the cards wipe off easy. I'd be more worried about teething toddlers or pets chewing on them...
John "Collar Stay" Kelly 2015-01-26T22:24:00-05:00
@Eric A - The average sales tax would be higher. Most states are above 6%. Google 'sales tax by state'.
Adam Vetter 2015-01-26T22:28:29-05:00
Are the cards going to be plastic? That would eliminate the need for sleeves and make this game of the highest quality.
synita luckey 2015-01-26T22:30:05-05:00
Now that NSFW has it's own deck, how about offering it as a separate reward level? That way new backers can choose the deck they want if they don't want both decks or if $20 is all they can contribute.
John "Collar Stay" Kelly 2015-01-26T22:33:43-05:00
@Synita - That may result in people dropping their pledges to only receive the NSFW deck, and would keep people from pledging more money for both decks. What sense would that make for the developers?
Yeah as much as I want to see a new reward level for ANYTHING I really think offering a NSFW deck only pledge level is a few steps backwards. They'd lose a lot of the funding they have now.
GLGamesMike 2015-01-26T22:56:39-05:00
Just joining the fun...So what is the record for most backers of a campaign?
@GLGames
I believe that distinction (for most backers) goes to the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter at 105,857 backers.
Rachel K Wright 2015-01-26T23:14:34-05:00
Happy Birthday, Elan!!!
Rod "BaKhan" Mitchell 2015-01-26T23:25:58-05:00
We'll beat reading rainbow tomorrow for sure!
Victor Morales 2015-01-26T23:39:38-05:00
I have a question. Will the artwork for the backside of the cards be different for the regular deck and the NSFW deck? I'd imagine if you were to combine the decks and shuffle them for bigger games shuffling them to mix them up, but the separate backside artwork to make it easier to separate the cards back to their respective decks, just in case one of my little cousins or something might want to play. And I don't want to have NSFW cards getting accidentally mixed in. That would be embarrassing. Hilarious, but embarrassing.
BruceP - The Chameleon 2015-01-26T23:51:00-05:00
@Victor M,
It's likely the backs of both decks will be the same so you can't see what kind of card you're drawing next, but something about the faces of the NSFW deck will be different. Different color background, border, or some symbol...
Keith O 2015-01-27T00:04:15-05:00
Once you draw a card, do you have to show everyone? If so, that kinda ruins the fun of defusing the exploding kitten card when other players are thinking you just lost. Also, if you dont have to show the card, one can simply lie that they didnt draw, can anyone clear this up a little?
Keith O 2015-01-27T00:05:41-05:00
Can lie that they didnt draw the exploding kitten card*
BruceP - The Chameleon 2015-01-27T00:07:54-05:00
We don't know the specifics of gameplay yet, but in pretty much any decent card game, you show what you drew, unless one of the principal mechanics is trying to deceive your opponents. But I don't believe Exploding Kittens is that way.
Keith O 2015-01-27T00:11:45-05:00
Nothing is "decent" about this game, Its titled "exploding kittens"!! But i guess we will just have to wait for the rules book
BruceP - The Chameleon 2015-01-27T00:12:34-05:00
I didn't mean 'decent' as in 'wholesome'. ;)
Keith O 2015-01-27T00:15:53-05:00
lol touche
Keith O 2015-01-27T00:19:37-05:00
Do you think they will end the funding earlier than they are suppose to?
BruceP - The Chameleon 2015-01-27T00:21:31-05:00
@Keith O,
A Kickstarter campaign can't be ended before the time is up without canceling the whole thing. Though they could artificially stop it by limiting the number of available pledges. Not sure why the would at this point.
Andre "Silver Ninjatten" Bernier 2015-01-27T00:21:34-05:00
what would be the point?
Matthew McKinney 2015-01-27T00:54:44-05:00
I would like to request NO plastic sleeves. I don't know why everyone wants them so much. I have played card games like Magic: the Gathering for years and years and never had problems keeping sleeved cards in good condition.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-27T01:11:47-05:00
It depends on the availability and cost of the set. I played MtG in the 90s and had a Black Lotus, 3 Mox, and quite a few Beta duals, and some other niceties in my Type I deck. I used sleeves and fake versions for the high end stuff while playing casual then replaced the fakes for tournaments or anything. After going to college I ended up selling the deck in pieces and got a few grand for it. Definitely didn't want anything bad happening to it during play.
However, if I'm playing something like Munchkin or Dominion, where I can always just go buy another deck? Meh, who cares.
@Logan Hey, you got enough for the acrylic health gems.
John Drinkwater 2015-01-27T01:22:16-05:00
@Logan - apparently promoting other KS projects in Comments is frowned upon by KickStarter ... have a quick look at the rules. (I can't cos I'm currently using an app not a browser)
@Logan your project is funded so I don't know what your complaining about. I won't be backing as it appears to be all male and as a woman I'm getting tired of the lack of representation/we're invisible.
Some projects take off. Some barely get funded. Others don't get funded. It's a combination of having a good fan group, good promotion by creator and fan group, having a product that gets people's attention, making the campaign fun and eye catching, product appealing to a large audience, and a little luck. Exploding kittens had all that in place.
Back to Exploding Kittens we broke $4 million tonight. WTG.
Logan Montgomery Knight 2015-01-27T01:50:10-05:00
Yes it is amazing! And I cant wait to play the game myself!
Lactres 2015-01-27T02:16:29-05:00

Adam Rançon about 17 hours ago :
Using data from Kicktraq, one can see that the distribution of backers and money is given by nice exponential laws starting from the second day.
For the money : M(t)=1 194 509 Exp(-0.591*(t-2))
For the # of backers : B(t)=30 364 Exp(-0.597*(t-2))
are the best fit, with t is the day, and these fits only apply for t>=2.
From this, my estimated total amount collected is $4 008 161
and the total number of backers 102 396.
Unless, of course, the new stretched goals change the appeal to new backers.
NB: to compute the total sums, do not forget to include t=1 in the sums.
LOOL, predicted 23 days ahead, failed 17 hours later.. nice try man
Like you expected anything else. Never again underestimate the power of fluffy! (and dynamite and grenades and nuclear rockets)

Backed Exploding Kittens, Tiny Epic Galaxies, and Epic Dice: Tower Defense; today is a good day!

Happy Birthday Elan!
K. L. 2015-01-27T05:05:31-05:00
@Proffejor, I backed TEG galaxies as well, going to check out Epic Dice: Tower Defense shortly. I hadn't visited kickstarter in years, and after my coworker told me about EK I figured what the hell. Since then I've backed 5 other games, and bought one completed KS from the developer's site. Even if EK completely sucks (which I highly doubt), I've definitely come out ahead in the gaming department. Next game night is going to be awesome!
I think Bring Your Own Book (BYOB) is one of the games I'm most excited about. I just love the idea of players having complete control over content.
Help Wanted was the game I purchased from the developer site. It looked awesome, and I vaguely recall someone recommending it. Received it today, haven't played yet, but it looks like it's going to be more fun than I expected. Seems like CAH with action cards.
K. L. 2015-01-27T05:18:45-05:00
@Proffejor, well, backed Epic Dice: Tower Defense, thanks for mentioning it! Most of my friends are card players, so it might be a bit difficult to find people to play with. But the game looks awesome, so I'll just keep it sealed until I meet more dice players :)
Arrhenius 2015-01-27T05:52:23-05:00
please, how can i know what are the shipping cost of shipping 2 ntsw decks? the web says "estra shipping charges may apply", 15$ for a deck is pretty expensive, but if i can buy another one with no extra shipping cost i think i will buy another one.
Justin Kennedy 2015-01-27T05:53:51-05:00
Around 1800 more backers and this is the most backed project of all time!
Peter S. 2015-01-27T05:53:57-05:00

Charles Babcock 2015-01-27T05:59:16-05:00
Was just about to say, 1750 backers to go in 23 days. I think the record will be broken by a good ways.
Simmonsstummer 2015-01-27T06:20:13-05:00
you should add a simbol or else to see the differences between the two deck in case at one point you should want to play with the base deck.
psyco363 2015-01-27T06:34:12-05:00
only 1714 backers needed and we did it the most backed project on KS
Melanie King 2015-01-27T07:08:34-05:00
So excited to be a part of this... Can't wait to explode me some kitties!
Justin Vaughan 2015-01-27T07:26:45-05:00
I love how they said that the biggest challenge would be if the project blew up and then it did just that.
Roland Boshnack 2015-01-27T07:35:03-05:00
@psyco363 Not quite most-backed yet. One project (Reading Rainbow) had more backers, and seven made more money. Of course, one of those seven was the Ouya...
Michael James Nelson 2015-01-27T07:37:04-05:00
So... will more of those $30 signatures be available any time soon? I would so love being asleep while more of those are added.
Still no news of any new stretch goals? Most backed, numbers of backers, money raised? What are our goals? (other than the obvious mo backers/mo money)
Rod "BaKhan" Mitchell 2015-01-27T09:45:43-05:00
@Evan, I bet they're waiting for us to beat out reading rainbow... set phasers to stunning!
I know, I am too. It will happen, so I'm just curious if they are going to put a SG in for it is all..
Chris 2015-01-27T09:52:46-05:00
Looking at the backer count per day and taking out the first 4 few days.
Knowing that weekends are slow. (Avg: 3000)
Sat: 4432
Sun: 2785
if Weekdays should hold an average of 4000 (Mon: 4973)
this should give us roughly 75-80,000 week day and about 9000 more on weekends.
That's JUST shy of 200,000
Then there is the last day Ramp up. This could get us Just over the 200,000 mark.
So I think 200k is possible.
That look like sound numbers?
Chris 2015-01-27T09:58:08-05:00
@Rod that would be brilliant if Elan/Matt does something up with Geordi in it :)
would be quite nice if he did something to bring attention to RR again actually because i believe the are still/always looking for funding.
Rod "BaKhan" Mitchell 2015-01-27T10:01:30-05:00
@Chris, you nailed it buddy! That is pretty much exactly how I do it to! If everything keeps going as it has, we should end up with around 200k backers and close to 8 mil. Time will tell of course!
As far a Geordi, that would be too awesome!
Teddy Pilz 2015-01-27T10:07:44-05:00
32 173 backers to go to catch Rainbow Reading, pledge wise.
Zachary Morales 2015-01-27T10:10:06-05:00
Ideas for strech goals, if they havent been suggested yet, magnetic deck boxes, and sleeves to protect the cards. Just food for thought, to be honest i am perfectly happy with my two decls for $35 haha.
LadyZ of the house Vampitten 2015-01-27T10:18:24-05:00
@Proffejor, I also backed Tiny Epic Galaxies! As well as Run Fight or Die expansion, and Unspeakable Words, and of course EK. I've gone a little nuts lately. Hahah I'm superrrrr psyched about EK; I have all the Oatmeal books so I can wait for more!!
@K.L., thanks for mentioning Help Wanted; I am looking into purchasing that one from their site.
Eric 'Trinkets' Baumgarten 2015-01-27T10:25:21-05:00
Under 1300 to beat reading rainbow's backers record!
Only 1.2 kilos of cake to go. But we all know it was a lie.
K. L. 2015-01-27T10:35:56-05:00
@LadyZ, you got it! And now I need to check out Run Fight or Die, haha
I also backed Unspeakable Words, looks like a great game!
Munsta 2015-01-27T10:36:28-05:00
I would love to see a web version of this game come out eventually, or pc/android/ios app. While I will enjoy this physical card game a lot, I'd love a way to play with my friends all over the world. Thanks!
Peter S. 2015-01-27T10:40:22-05:00
@Elan can we please get some details about card stock, box dimensions and quality?
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-01-27T10:41:44-05:00
It's on copy paper, the box is 40"x32"x12". Quality should be fine as long as you don't open the box or shuffle the deck. That might kill it.
I forsee beating reading rainbow backer wise by end of the work day...at least end of my work day. which is in roughly 7.75hours.
André Santos 2015-01-27T10:45:26-05:00

Rod "BaKhan" Mitchell 2015-01-27T10:46:05-05:00

Pigacorn piggy bank??

Are the cards going to be plastic? That would eliminate the need for sleeves and make this game of the highest quality.
Now that NSFW has it's own deck, how about offering it as a separate reward level? That way new backers can choose the deck they want if they don't want both decks or if $20 is all they can contribute.
Just joining the fun...So what is the record for most backers of a campaign?
@GLGames
I believe that distinction (for most backers) goes to the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter at 105,857 backers.
Happy Birthday, Elan!!!
We'll beat reading rainbow tomorrow for sure!
@Victor M,
It's likely the backs of both decks will be the same so you can't see what kind of card you're drawing next, but something about the faces of the NSFW deck will be different. Different color background, border, or some symbol...
Once you draw a card, do you have to show everyone? If so, that kinda ruins the fun of defusing the exploding kitten card when other players are thinking you just lost. Also, if you dont have to show the card, one can simply lie that they didnt draw, can anyone clear this up a little?
Can lie that they didnt draw the exploding kitten card*
We don't know the specifics of gameplay yet, but in pretty much any decent card game, you show what you drew, unless one of the principal mechanics is trying to deceive your opponents. But I don't believe Exploding Kittens is that way.
Nothing is "decent" about this game, Its titled "exploding kittens"!! But i guess we will just have to wait for the rules book
I didn't mean 'decent' as in 'wholesome'. ;)
lol touche
Do you think they will end the funding earlier than they are suppose to?
@Keith O,
A Kickstarter campaign can't be ended before the time is up without canceling the whole thing. Though they could artificially stop it by limiting the number of available pledges. Not sure why the would at this point.
what would be the point?
I would like to request NO plastic sleeves. I don't know why everyone wants them so much. I have played card games like Magic: the Gathering for years and years and never had problems keeping sleeved cards in good condition.
This is nuts! I cant get even 36 backers to look at my game :( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/knightgames/eastwood-deadliest-gunslingers
Meh, who cares.
zee FAQs! zey do nosing!
@Logan Hey, you got enough for the acrylic health gems.
@Logan - apparently promoting other KS projects in Comments is frowned upon by KickStarter ... have a quick look at the rules. (I can't cos I'm currently using an app not a browser)
@Tsveta True True! @John ok thanks!
WTG.
Yes it is amazing! And I cant wait to play the game myself!
This looks great! And over 4million? Who knew exploding kittehs would be so popul- of course they would, who does not love kittens and explosives haha
Pozdrowienia z Krakowa dla wszystkich Rodaków lubiących koty... i eksplozje!
@Logan... I looked, and it's not for me. It's all men, it's all violence, and it doesn't look like there's any complex strategy. Meh. I wish you well, though; I get that all KS project creators have a dream and work hard to make those dreams real.
LOOL, predicted 23 days ahead, failed 17 hours later.. nice try man
Math vs Kittens - 0:1
Like you expected anything else. Never again underestimate the power of fluffy! (and dynamite and grenades and nuclear rockets)
Backed Exploding Kittens, Tiny Epic Galaxies, and Epic Dice: Tower Defense; today is a good day!
come on guys! give us some strech goals! :-)
Happy Birthday Elan! :)
Happy Birthday Elan!
@Proffejor, well, backed Epic Dice: Tower Defense, thanks for mentioning it! Most of my friends are card players, so it might be a bit difficult to find people to play with. But the game looks awesome, so I'll just keep it sealed until I meet more dice players :)
please, how can i know what are the shipping cost of shipping 2 ntsw decks? the web says "estra shipping charges may apply", 15$ for a deck is pretty expensive, but if i can buy another one with no extra shipping cost i think i will buy another one.
Around 1800 more backers and this is the most backed project of all time!
If anyone shares my obsession with watching this campaign move and is an Android user, check out this widget (I'm not the developer and have no personal connection) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details…
Was just about to say, 1750 backers to go in 23 days. I think the record will be broken by a good ways.
you should add a simbol or else to see the differences between the two deck in case at one point you should want to play with the base deck.
only 1714 backers needed and we did it the most backed project on KS
So excited to be a part of this... Can't wait to explode me some kitties!
I love how they said that the biggest challenge would be if the project blew up and then it did just that.
@psyco363 Not quite most-backed yet. One project (Reading Rainbow) had more backers, and seven made more money. Of course, one of those seven was the Ouya...
So... will more of those $30 signatures be available any time soon? I would so love being asleep while more of those are added.
Let's shoot for 200K
LOL, you made it to Know Your Meme :D
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/exploding-kittens
@L. "TakeruDavis" Flidr, awesome, thanks for the link!
I see we're well on our way to leaving reading rainbow in the dust! Good work people!
Fortunately Geordi is able to "see" through dust
@K.L. haha that's funny. And good morning fellow backers.
Happy birthday, Elan!
@K.L., nice one!
Still no news of any new stretch goals? Most backed, numbers of backers, money raised? What are our goals? (other than the obvious mo backers/mo money)
@Evan, I bet they're waiting for us to beat out reading rainbow... set phasers to stunning!
I know, I am too. It will happen, so I'm just curious if they are going to put a SG in for it is all..
@Rod that would be brilliant if Elan/Matt does something up with Geordi in it :)
would be quite nice if he did something to bring attention to RR again actually because i believe the are still/always looking for funding.
@Chris, you nailed it buddy! That is pretty much exactly how I do it to! If everything keeps going as it has, we should end up with around 200k backers and close to 8 mil. Time will tell of course!
As far a Geordi, that would be too awesome!
32 173 backers to go to catch Rainbow Reading, pledge wise.
Ideas for strech goals, if they havent been suggested yet, magnetic deck boxes, and sleeves to protect the cards. Just food for thought, to be honest i am perfectly happy with my two decls for $35 haha.
Under 1300 to beat reading rainbow's backers record!
Only 1.2 kilos of cake to go. But we all know it was a lie.
@LadyZ, you got it! And now I need to check out Run Fight or Die, haha
I also backed Unspeakable Words, looks like a great game!
I would love to see a web version of this game come out eventually, or pc/android/ios app. While I will enjoy this physical card game a lot, I'd love a way to play with my friends all over the world. Thanks!
@Elan can we please get some details about card stock, box dimensions and quality?
It's on copy paper, the box is 40"x32"x12". Quality should be fine as long as you don't open the box or shuffle the deck. That might kill it.
I forsee beating reading rainbow backer wise by end of the work day...at least end of my work day. which is in roughly 7.75hours.
Finally took the time to back this. Proud to help the most backed project on the Kickstarter history! (technically not yet, but we can already celebrate right?)
As a strech goal I would like the cards to be impregnated with catnip seeds, that way when they get wet / worn out you can plant them! ;)
