Yeah, the GB one was kind of a kick in the nuts. First, if you already have secured the licensing necessary and you're an existing game company, you probably shouldn't be using KS. Second, it was way to expensive for the game. Third, it looked like it was just thrown together without a lot of thought. It just didn't look fun. I absolutely love GB, but that just reeked of 'money grab'.
Melissa "The Creeper" Nicole 2015-03-05T11:57:27-05:00
what i do think is somewhat unfortunate about KS, is I wonder how many people see something they like that is near ending, but don't fund it because it looks like it won't get funded. (i'm sure there was a simpler way of saying that). I've had those moments myself. But if EVERYONE liked the facebook page, then it would be achieved!

@Mel
Yeah, probably happens all the time. "Well, I'll click remind me and see if it gets funded. Oh, it's only 70% with two days? Guess that won't happen."
The early shipping is one lure, but pretty sure if I ever make a KS I'll go the limited 10% off route. Make early lookers go ahead and 'lock-in' to save a few bucks, knowing they can back out. Getting a number of early backers gives momentum and will helpfully propel you to funded status before all the last day wafers come in.

Mike Kabala 2015-03-05T13:19:37-05:00
@GM, people generally do not stop to think about the amount of work that needs to be done behind the scenes to correct an error. They generally only think about what impact the situation has on them at the moment. The more urgent it is to them, the more quickly it should be resolved and. "screw the red tape!" Most of us forget that that red tape nees to be managed by someone to keep the situation from becoming much worse. This is the reason yours is a thankless job.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:21:59-05:00
@Cheetah: And getting phone calls about wanting to know why someone isn't getting direct deposit, when I had only been at the desk for 3hours, doesn't help. Zero training, no one around to talk to so they can help me figure it out...that is also another thing that is full of crap.
@Tchotchke: I knew they sucked before I started working.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:25:31-05:00
@GM
While you're at it, can you set up a few people's direct deposit to my bank account? Or just one VP or something if there's flags for multiple checks going into one account.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:31:43-05:00
Well, thinking about it further, someone would notice if their entire paycheck didn't show up.
What we should do is take a small percentage. My company allows for a set percentage or dollar amount to go to separate accounts, up to 9. So we should take like .1% from everyone's and put all of that into one account. The other 99.9% goes the way they normally allocate. Do it at the very beginning of the year when all of the insurance costs change. Nobody would ever notice.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:35:02-05:00
I mean, it's not even really stealing, we're talking about fractions of a penny.
You're talking about [hypothetical money] in technicality Tchotchke.... that's a little different. Especially when you get down to .009 cents and below, there's no obligation to round either up or down here since we don't have a currency system that handles less than pennies..
@Tchotchke: Except the reports that the VPs and Controller sign off on would show it.
Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton 2015-03-05T13:40:58-05:00
So I got a reply from Indiegogo about my reporting of the Lix Dice campaign there ... they say it is "under review" for TOS violations. Seems they took action in under twelve hours ... it has now been several days since I reported the Lix Dice campaign here to KS (with no action as yet).
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:42:10-05:00
It's more than a penny, just quoting Office Space. 0.1% on a $1000 check would be a buck. Do that 24-26 times for a few hundred thousand employees, and you're set for life. :D
@GCoD: As I mentioned a while ago, KS only cares about the money that they get from it, who cares about if it's a scam.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:43:39-05:00
I get the strong feeling with things like the Pebble Watch, Lix, the GB game, etc that KS doesn't actually care about keeping to their core. As long as they get 5% of it, you're welcome to post it.
@Tchotchke: That's why pebble upsets me. I don't diss the product, simply the fact that it does NOT need KS when it is the world's most popular magik watch.
Mike Kabala 2015-03-05T13:47:10-05:00
I love the "not really stealing" argument. Whenever you have to use the word "really" to qualify whether it's stealing, it's guaranteed to be stealing.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:49:31-05:00
... and the one that happened before, I think what they were doing is changing the rounding function for account management and billing. The rounder used to go half cent and more goes up, less than half cent goes down. They were just rounding them all down and then aggregating that into a separate deposit. It's not that the bank didn't care about the fractions of a penny, just that their top level calculations expected it to aggregate appropriately, and therefore wouldn't notice the difference. If the top level calculations always rounded up or always rounded down it wouldn't have been 'wrong', but that they would have noticed the discrepancy.
So, take something like Fidelity who keeps track of thousandths of a stock. Obviously, you can't buy or sell one one-thousandth of a stock. However Fidelity may piece out some or just pay going rate. Now if you stole half a thousandth of a share of stock on average from every trade that Fidelity completes? You'd be loaded.
Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton 2015-03-05T13:52:26-05:00
Eh, whose to say the major investment corporations aren't already doing this with their financial dealings? Like we would ever know, one way or the other?
Jeff "Great Cane of Doom"™ Saxton 2015-03-05T13:53:32-05:00
lol I love just keeping tabs on Lix Dice for no other reason than to watch GCoD troll the troll.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:55:49-05:00
Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if they did. Also they wouldn't even need to hide it. Unless you were trading millions of dollars of shares a year, it wouldn't even be worth your time to argue.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T13:57:45-05:00
Investment banks also pay (and sometimes use other illegal means) to get the closest possible internet connections to the market. Some of them have made obscene amounts of cash being able to manipulate stock prices by half a cent a few hundred thousand times a day.
Well at the fractional level it's a little different, and most companies just round up or down. One way or another it needs to be accounted for, and taxes need to be paid on it.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T14:09:13-05:00
Yeah, and if you just always round down you (1) make more money, and (2) notice these schemes faster. The one in the 70s didn't notice for awhile because they just ran reporting on all of the interest numbers on a higher, holistic level, and it was within a buck or two of what they were expecting, which was the way it had always been. They had no idea what was actually happening on the individual account level. Granted, with better computing power now, reporting can be done more granularly if required.
C.F. "The Ex-President" Heyns 2015-03-05T14:14:19-05:00
Round half to even
A tie-breaking rule that is less biased is round half to even, namely:
If the fraction of y is 0.5, then q is the even integer nearest to y.
Thus, for example, +23.5 becomes +24, as does +24.5; while −23.5 becomes −24, as does −24.5.
This method treats positive and negative values symmetrically, and is therefore free of sign bias. More importantly, for reasonable distributions of y values, the expected (average) value of the rounded numbers is the same as that of the original numbers. However, this rule will introduce a towards-zero bias when y − 0.5 is even, and a towards-infinity bias for when it is odd.
This variant of the round-to-nearest method is also called unbiased rounding, convergent rounding, statistician's rounding, Dutch rounding, Gaussian rounding, odd-even rounding,[3] bankers' rounding, or broken rounding.
This is the default rounding mode used in IEEE 754 computing functions and operators.
C.F. "The Ex-President" Heyns 2015-03-05T14:14:54-05:00
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T14:18:05-05:00
Yeah, that works fine with discrete numbers (countably infinite, or rational) numbers. With the set of real numbers it produces the same problems as regular rounding, though would happen infinitely less often for a set of random numbers.
I THINK that a small percentage of people are stupid. And the other's just signed up before it was extremely apparent that it's a scam. They've dropped two or three backs, but picked one back up....
@LZ: People are idiots. And people suck. Burn all the people to ash and you solve both problems....just saying.
Eric 'Tchotchke' Aschner 2015-03-05T14:24:44-05:00
Thinking about how to word that, and it seems impossible to do it both correctly and not sound like an idiot.
"Rounding an infinite number of real numbers, gives you a larger infinite number of numbers rounding away from zero than the infinite number of numbers rounding towards zero, thus introducing an infinity bias away from zero."
Kevin "Lord Zombitten" Buckner 2015-03-05T14:26:06-05:00
@Potatten: Eh, I'll chalk it up to collateral damage. Would solve some of these headaches that are spawning every 5minutes with the US payroll....oh look, there's another one. -.-
Oh how I wish I had exploding kittens for this year's TableTop.... I'll have to rub it in next year when Me and Cha! are the only ones here that have it :-P

So I got a reply from Indiegogo about my reporting of the Lix Dice campaign there ... they say it is "under review" for TOS violations. Seems they took action in under twelve hours ... it has now been several days since I reported the Lix Dice campaign here to KS (with no action as yet).
It's more than a penny, just quoting Office Space. 0.1% on a $1000 check would be a buck. Do that 24-26 times for a few hundred thousand employees, and you're set for life. :D
You aren't the only one to report it here GCoD. I've done so twice, both for different reasons.
@GCoD: As I mentioned a while ago, KS only cares about the money that they get from it, who cares about if it's a scam.
I get the strong feeling with things like the Pebble Watch, Lix, the GB game, etc that KS doesn't actually care about keeping to their core. As long as they get 5% of it, you're welcome to post it.
Oh, well in certain areas fractions of pennies come into play.... and it works a little differently.
@Tchotchke: That's why pebble upsets me. I don't diss the product, simply the fact that it does NOT need KS when it is the world's most popular magik watch.
I love the "not really stealing" argument. Whenever you have to use the word "really" to qualify whether it's stealing, it's guaranteed to be stealing.
lol this is true CB.
... and the one that happened before, I think what they were doing is changing the rounding function for account management and billing.
Eh, whose to say the major investment corporations aren't already doing this with their financial dealings? Like we would ever know, one way or the other?
Whoo hoo. Billet Dice finally broke the 50% funded barrier ...
lol I love just keeping tabs on Lix Dice for no other reason than to watch GCoD troll the troll.
Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if they did. Also they wouldn't even need to hide it. Unless you were trading millions of dollars of shares a year, it wouldn't even be worth your time to argue.
Doing the educational thing again...

Also any one in Philly: I will be going to TableTop day at 7th dimenstion games out in Jenkintown! http://www.eventbrite.com/e/tabletop-day-7th-dimension-games-tickets-15932816483
Yeah, that works fine with discrete numbers (countably infinite, or rational) numbers. With the set of real numbers it produces the same problems as regular rounding, though would happen infinitely less often for a set of random numbers.
It's not ever going to be a flawless system.
Why is Lix 78% funded? What is wrong with people?!
I THINK that a small percentage of people are stupid. And the other's just signed up before it was extremely apparent that it's a scam. They've dropped two or three backs, but picked one back up....
@LZ: People are idiots. And people suck. Burn all the people to ash and you solve both problems....just saying.
GM, I like your thinking
@GM: Burn all the people includes you in the equation ya know.
@tvhotckea - you going all office space on us?
Home. All my shoveling for kittykitty is a complete wash now.
@Creeper: Just install small flamethrowers that will keep a path cleared. Obviously not ones that stay on all the time, but ones you can turn on and off depending on the weather.
No, just trying to figure out how to make a few million dollars without working. These thought exercises always end up as 'buy a lottery ticket', 'give up', or 'do something illegal'.
*am only imagining baby dragons lined up outside his house*
http://what-if.xkcd.com/130/
I like how in detail the response is. :)
@Creeper: I would personally go for the Dragons, because then you can keep them as pets. :3
@Tchotchke: Sure, ruin my fun why don't you.
Only if they stay mini. If they grow up and get all "wreck the villagers lives" and I have to chain them in some underground dungeon- then pass. I will not Daenarys this sh*t up.
You certainly need something kitten friendly, why not go for a Cait Sith or a Matagot instead?
Oh come on. Name ONE movie where Dragons go all rampage-y and start killing people.
Most movies with dragons in them.
